7 LA Businesses That Should Never Use a P.O. Box

P.O. Boxes are cheap, and for some uses they're perfectly fine. But for these 7 categories of LA-area business, a P.O. Box will silently trip you up — usually at the worst possible moment, like the day before a launch or during a payment-processor review.

1. Etsy / Amazon / Shopify sellers

All three platforms verify the business address you list. P.O. Boxes get flagged. Sellers report being suspended for "suspicious address" with no recourse other than re-verifying with a real street address.

2. New California LLCs

California Form LLC-1 explicitly requires a physical street address for both the business and the registered agent. A P.O. Box gets the entire filing rejected, costing you the $70 filing fee on resubmission and 4–6 weeks of delay.

3. Real estate agents and brokers

California Department of Real Estate licensing requires a real address. Many brokerages (especially Compass, KW, Coldwell Banker) won't let you set up under their roster with a P.O. Box.

4. Food / restaurant / catering businesses

California Department of Public Health permitting requires a real physical address tied to your facility. P.O. Boxes are non-starters for any food handling permit.

5. Licensed contractors

CSLB (Contractors State License Board) requires a real address. Bonding companies require a real address. Insurance companies (workers' comp, GL) require a real address. P.O. Box = repeated rejection.

6. Independent professionals (attorneys, CPAs, real estate, dental)

Most professional licensing bodies in California require a public-record physical address. Even where they don't, malpractice insurers usually will.

7. Anyone applying for a business credit card

American Express, Chase Ink, Capital One Spark — all require a physical street address. Some will accept a CMRA address (like ours) where they won't accept a P.O. Box.

What to use instead

A USPS-certified CMRA gives you a real street address that works everywhere a P.O. Box doesn't. Costs about the same as a P.O. Box ($50–$95 for 3 months at our shop). Acceptance rate at banks, marketplaces, and licensing bodies is essentially 100%.
