How Much It Really Costs to Start an Etsy Shop in 2026 (LA Edition)

Etsy fees, LLC, real address, branding, taxes — everything you'll actually pay in your first year, with the cheap and not-cheap paths side by side.

Etsy is the best low-friction way to start an online shop in 2026. But the "just sign up and sell" pitch hides a real cost stack — and if you're in California, you have a few extra line items that NY/TX/FL sellers don't.

Here's the honest math, with the cheap path and the "do it right" path side by side.

1. Etsy itself

Etsy charges:

  • $0.20 per listing (every 4 months or until it sells)
  • 6.5% transaction fee on every sale (item price + shipping)
  • 3% + $0.25 payment processing via Etsy Payments
  • 15% Etsy Ads commission if you opt in (optional, but they push it hard)
Realistic blended cost on a $20 sale: roughly $2.30. Or about 11.5% of revenue.

2. California LLC (optional, but most serious sellers do it)

If you want to:

  • Open a business bank account
  • Get wholesale buyers (Faire, Tundra, etc.)
  • Apply for a trademark
  • Protect personal assets

...you need an LLC. California cost in year 1:

  • $70 Articles of Organization (state filing)
  • $20 Statement of Information (within 90 days)
  • $800 annual franchise tax (yes, even in year 1)
  • $0 EIN (free at irs.gov, takes 15 min)
  • $0–$300 registered agent (you can be your own if you have a real address)
Year-1 LLC floor in California: ~$890. Plan for it before you scale revenue.

3. Real business address

Etsy verifies addresses — P.O. Boxes get flagged. Your options:

  • Use your home address — free, but published publicly on your shop and the LLC filing
  • P.O. Box — $20–$30/month, but rejected by Etsy verification, the IRS, and most banks
  • CMRA private mailbox — $50–$95 for 3 months, real LA street address, accepted everywhere

4. Branding & product photography

Etsy is a visual marketplace. Bad photos = no sales. Real numbers:

  • $0–$300 if you DIY with a phone, white sheet, and natural light (totally viable)
  • $200–$800 for a freelance product photographer (10–30 photos)
  • $50–$500 for a basic brand (logo + colors + typeface) — Fiverr to local designer

5. Sales tax + permits

California requires a Seller's Permit if you sell tangible goods — free, online, ~10 minutes at cdtfa.ca.gov.

If you sell into other states, watch the "economic nexus" thresholds (usually $100k or 200 transactions in a state). Below that you don't need to register elsewhere.

6. Shipping & supplies

Realistic monthly:

  • $50–$200 shipping supplies (boxes, mailers, tape, labels)
  • $0–$50 shipping software (Etsy's built-in is fine for most)
  • $5–$50 per local courier run if you ship same-day (we do $5 flat in NoHo)

Cheap path — total year-1

  • Etsy fees on $5k revenue: ~$575
  • DIY photos + brand: $0–$50
  • Home address: $0
  • Sole proprietorship + DBA (skip LLC): $26 (LA County DBA fee + publication)
  • Seller's permit: $0
  • Shipping supplies (low volume): $200
  • Total: ~$850 + Etsy fees

Do-it-right path — total year-1

  • Etsy fees on $20k revenue: ~$2,300
  • Brand kit + 30 product photos: $700
  • Real LA street address (CMRA): $230 (3 months Business plan + 1 renewal)
  • California LLC + EIN: $890 (state + franchise tax)
  • Seller's permit: $0
  • Shipping supplies (mid volume): $1,200
  • Total: ~$5,300 + Etsy fees on $20k
