Real Address for Affiliate Marketers — Where Does the 1099-NEC Go?

If you make affiliate income from Amazon Associates, ShareASale, ClickBank, etc. — your 1099-NECs need a real address. Here's why your apartment isn't the right one.

Why affiliate income matters more than you think

Successful affiliate marketers easily earn 1099s from 10+ networks: Amazon Associates, ShareASale, Impact, CJ, ClickBank, Awin, Rakuten, individual brand programs, plus payment processors (PayPal, Stripe). Each network sends a 1099-NEC if they pay you over $600/yr.

All those tax forms arrive in late January and early February. They go to whatever address you have on file with each network. If that's your apartment, every network has your home. If you ever move, you're chasing forwarding from 10+ senders.

Plus: affiliate income often reveals your business activity to neighbors and roommates if mail arrives at your shared apartment. Some affiliate income is in spaces (adult, gambling, controversial categories) where privacy matters.

What a real business address solves

  • All 1099-NECs come to one address (not your apartment)
  • Mail scanning means tax forms get scanned + delivered to your dashboard within 24 hours of arrival
  • Privacy: your home address never goes on a network's database
  • Permanence: even if you move, your business address stays the same — no chasing forwards
  • Banking integration: your tax forms match what your business bank account uses for ID verification

Should affiliate marketers form an LLC?

Trigger to form one: when affiliate income exceeds ~$50k/year. At that point:

Single-member LLC + S-corp election starts saving meaningful tax (5-15k/yr at $100k+ income).

Banking is cleaner with an EIN-based business account than personal accounts that get flagged for 'business activity.'

Liability: low-risk for content-only affiliates. Higher-risk if you're reviewing physical products that could harm consumers (CBD, supplements, fitness gear).

Below $50k, the $800/yr CA franchise tax often eats more than the LLC saves. Sole prop + insurance is fine.

Real address checklist for affiliate marketers

  • USPS-CMRA certified (passes Amazon Associates, Impact, CJ verification)
  • Mail scanning (catches every 1099-NEC + IRS letter)
  • Single-storefront CMRA, not a national network with thousands of accounts (cleaner verification profile)
  • Free notary on Form 1583 (you'll need it for the CMRA setup)
  • Walk-in counter (useful for any in-person verification a sponsor might require)

What about your YouTube / blog / podcast about page?

FTC guidelines require affiliates to disclose material connections. They don't require you to publish your home address. Most successful affiliate sites use a CMRA address on their about page + footer + privacy policy. Your audience sees a real LA business address; your home stays private.

Some affiliates list a P.O. Box. P.O. Boxes are fine for general correspondence but get rejected by Stripe, Etsy verification, and certain affiliate networks. A real CMRA address sidesteps all of those issues.
